Every year we jump!ers identify a word which we believe will represent a big ‘theme’ for the year ahead and, which points to how we, as marketeers, need to think if we’re to be ‘on theme’. 2011’s word was ‘Defiance’; 2010’s GUTS; 2009’s ‘Rethink’

For 2012, it’s: ‘unfuck’.

We did not choose this word lightly.

We have debated it for weeks. We found alternatives and pretended to be happy with them. But nothing sat well with us. Nothing else captured the unbearable need people have to find new ways to relieve the angst and the anger and the loss they’ve been struggling with for the past three years.

Nothing else captured the role we, as citizens, with resources, touchpoints and brands must start to play if we’re to strengthen our connections with people.

We need to stop talking. Stop waiting to be more ready. Start doing.

People need us to help them unfuck their lives, their communities, their futures. Their ‘todays’.

Not just ‘improve’; ‘better’; ‘give’; ‘help’; ‘encourage’; ‘smooth’; ‘facilitate’; ‘simplify’; ‘reassure’; ‘assuage’; ‘comfort’; ‘plan’; ‘manage’. But ‘unfuck’.

This is not a time for light words; light actions; light impact. We need to be able to answer the question: ‘what did you do to make things better? What did you do to unfuck the situation?’. This is a time for bold action; bold impact. Bold words.

In many ways, it’s the most positive word we’ve ever come up with.

Our word for 2011 is defiance.

defiance. 2011 will be the year we discover the power of self. Our questions, once internalised and unspoken,
will find voice and seek answers. Real answers. So each of us will discover his or her power; a power which demands an outlet, which cannot remain still. The bubble has burst and the energy flows. Roars. We will demand openness, transparency, fairness. We will seek new solutions, turn everything on its head. We will no longer accept what you say or wait for you to create our future. We will reclaim. We will defy expectations. We will not be defined by what we have; we will be judged by what we do. You will be judged by what you
do. We will challenge, we will push, we will persist, we will win. We will defy how we have been trained to act and be. And we will reward those who help us.

No. 8 – GE11 Doorstep

On the 25^th February in Ireland there’s only one show in town – GE11.

A number of election candidates and their teams kindly invited us to tag along as observers on theirs and their teams’ door to door canvassing. This Rubberneck report is the result of observational trips by jump!ers accompanying those candidates and their teams as they canvassed their constituencies over the last two weeks.

This is a snapshot of Ireland in February 2011. It’s relevant to brands that want to get in tune with people and forge closer connections – just like election candidates!
